A Smart Approach

Helping students and their families confidently and strategically move through the college selection process

At Smart College Selection, our focus is on college selection rather than college admissions because we believe that students should be choosing between the thousands of excellent schools to find those that fit them best.

The table has a laptop, a red tumbler, a soda can, sticky notes, a highlighter, and a sign that says 'Share.' The room has white walls, a framed picture, a wooden cabinet with hand sanitizer, and a hallway with a door slightly open.

Your Student’s Needs Come First

Before we ever look at a school, we spend time helping your student understand themselves — their goals, how they learn, what kind of environment will help them grow. We build a set of criteria together. The initial list follows from that. Every school your student decides to apply to is on their final list for a reason.

The approach shapes the experience. Students who understand why they’re considering a school ask better questions on campus visits and create more compelling applications. And come spring, when the decisions arrive, those students can make a reasoned choice among great options.

Giving students the opportunity to choose between schools they understand and genuinely want to attend is the goal we're working toward from the very beginning.

A Proven & Positive Process

We have fine-tuned our process over the years so that you get started at the right time without having to feel rushed, and your student is ready to go when the time comes.

Smart Beginnings

Most families begin working with us in their student’s sophomore year. In those early meetings, we focus on the things that matter early — course selection, activities, testing timing, summer plans. There’s no pressure and no urgency. We’re laying the groundwork so your student is prepared and ready.

Smart Research & Refinement

In the junior year, we work with you through a series of criteria-building sessions — exploring what matters academically, socially, and practically. We research potential schools and suggest 15 - 25 schools for your student to explore.

From there, students research, visit, and refine to narrow to an application list — schools your student understands deeply and is genuinely excited to attend. Every school on the final list has a purpose.

Smart Strategy

The Family Application Strategy Meeting brings everyone together before senior year to confirm the list, assess risk, clarify roles, and set the final plan, including key milestones.

Our Signature College Application Workshop

Every student spends a week with us the summer before senior year — working intensively on strategy, essays, applications, and resume. By the time school starts, the hardest work is done. Senior year looks different for Smart families.

Support for the Whole Family

This is a family process, not just a student process. Parents need guidance, too — how to stay connected without taking over. We consider that part of the work seriously.

We anticipate the questions parents have before they have them. We communicate after every meeting. We’re available to parents separately from their student.

We spend a lot of time thinking about the parent role in this process. Most parents tell us this is something they didn’t know they needed and something they can’t imagine having gone without. We know it is essential, because we’ve been there — both professionally and personally.
